Barclays, HSBC, TSB, the Bank of Scotland, Tesco Bank, and Sainsbury’s Bank were all hit by an internet outage on Thursday.
For a short period, online banking services were either inaccessible or only partially accessible.
Other companies impacted by the temporary glitch included Airbnb, the PlayStation Network, Steam, and British Airways.
Content delivery company Akamai Technologies said that the outage had been triggered by a bug in its system.
“At 15:46 UTC today, a software configuration update triggered a bug in the DNS system, the system that directs browsers to websites,” Akamai told National Technology News in a statement. “This caused a disruption impacting availability of some customer websites.”
The company said that the disruption had lasted up to an hour.
After rolling back a software configuration update, the services resumed normal operations.
“We apologise for the inconvenience that resulted,” it concluded. “We are reviewing our software update process to prevent future disruptions.”
